The Most Popular Dog Breeds

Which are the most popular dog breeds? with so many types of dog around It can be hard work finding a good family dog. Lets look at The USA's Top 10 best loved mutts. most popular dog breeds, best breeds

Enthusiasm for the most popular breeds of today waxes and wanes, popularity like everything can be a fickle thing, fads and passing trends cause us to look back in horror at the fashion crimes of our youth, popularity for dog breeds can be a similar thing.

The most popular breeds of the past have been very different to those we prefer today. According to AKC statistics, between 1905-55 The Boston Terrier was consistently in the top two spots.

American Cocker Spaniels took over as The USA’s overall favourite between 1936-52, before being usurped by the Beagle.

The Beagle remained top dog until being ousted in 1959 by the Poodle who reigned supreme for over 20 years. In 1982 the American Cocker regained the crown, but From 1991 onwards Labrador Retrievers have by a country mile been the most popular breeds around.

What's your favourite Dog breed?

Popular culture also plays its part influencing breed popularity; the film career of Rin-Tin-Tin caused German Shepherds to displace the Boston Terrier in 1925 as top dog.

There was also a perceptible surge of popularity for Dalmatians coinciding with Walt Disney’s Film 101 Dalmatians, not to mention the eternal appeal of the Collie after ‘Lassie Come Home’.

I wonder how long before Chihuahuas are in the most popular breeds list as a result of Paris Hilton’s well publicised ownership of the breed.

What's Your Favourite Dog Breed?

Ok so the world loves a Labrador but do you ?
perhaps all that slobbery panting and clumsiness is'nt your thing .

Maybe you love the refined chic of the silky Shih Tzu,or the sweet gentle softness of a spaniel.

"PAF! to your soft and sweet, give me a dog with big jaws that will protect my house when i'm out" I hear the German Shepherd lovers cry.
